Die Aufklärung strebt danach, den Mythos, die bloße Doxa, zu entzaubern und damit magische Vorstellungen der Welt im Namen eines Fortschritts zu überwinden. Das Medium dieser Überwindung ist die moderne Wissenschaft und – als praktisches System dieser – die moderne Technik. Sie ist ohne Aufklärung und die Überwindung magischer Ideen nicht verständlich.
Gleichwohl drängt sich uns immer mehr der Eindruck auf, Technik führe zu einer Wiederverzauberung der Welt: Sie hat eine Komplexität erreicht, welche ohne technische Ausbildung nicht einmal mehr erahnt, geschweige denn überblickt werden kann. Gleichzeitig hat die Technik ästhetisch wie methodisch eine Perfektion erreicht, durch die sie sich nahtlos in unsere Alltagswelt einfügen lässt. Mehr noch: Die Technik versteht es auch immer mehr unseren Alltag zu transformieren und unsere Praktiken zu bestimmen. Sie verspricht Fortschritt und umfassenden Wohlstand. Doch bemerken wir immer öfter, dass sie nicht nur einfach ein simples Werk ist, das unter der bewussten Kontrolle eines Ingenieurs stehend unseren Wünschen dient. Sie transformiert vielmehr unsere Vorstellungen und Bedürfnisse – aber nicht indem die Technik die Utopie möglich werden lässt, sondern indem Technik selbst utopische Erzählungen von sich
hervorbringt.
Wenn diese Diagnose richtig ist, dann ist der Status von Technik ambivalent: Sie ist längst eine Wahrheit von Aufklärung und Wissenschaft und damit vom Versprechen der Überwindung des Mythos durchzogen. Und doch scheint sie damit selbst die Ursache der Wiederverzauberung und angesichts nie einholbarer Versprechen gar Ursache eines Wunsches nach einer Rückkehr in den Mythos zu sein. Wenn aber solch ein Wunsch besteht, kann und soll sich die Aufklärung ihm entgegenstellen?

Alle Studierende und Doktoranden/-innen der Philosophie bis zum Beginn der Promotionsphase sind eingeladen, ihre Themenvorschläge bis zum 1. Juni 2010 einzureichen. Vorschläge aus angrenzenden Wissenschaften sind willkommen. Der Vorschlagstext soll keinen Hinweis auf die/den Verfasser/-in enthalten sowie eine Länge von 2000 Zeichen nicht überschreiten. Die Auswahl der Vorschläge erfolgt anonym durch Studierende des Instituts für Philosophie der Technischen Universität Darmstadt mit Unterstützung durch die Lehrenden des Instituts. Gleichwohl werden die Bewerber/-innen gebeten, ihrem Anschreiben eine biographische Notiz beizulegen. Beiträge aus dem Ausland sind ausdrücklich erwünscht, sollen aber entsprechend der Tagungssprachen in Deutsch oder Englisch verfasst werden.

Call for Papers: Re-Enchantment of the World? - Technology between Enlightenment, progress, myth and magic
Enlightenment aspires to disenchant myth in order to overcome the magical image of the world – all in the name of progress and by means of modern technology. The latter being considered as a practical system within modern science, which is only perspicuous through Enlightenment and the overcoming of magical ideas.

Nevertheless we cannot fight the impression, that technology leads to a re-enchantment of the world. By now technology has attained a level of complexity, which can neither be predicted nor fully captured without an appropriate kind of technical education.
At the same time technology has reached such aesthetic and systematic standards, that can be smoothly integrated in our daily lives. Even more technology affects our everyday doings, transforms our daily lives and furthermore promises progress and extensive welfare.
However we begin to realise, technology is not just a mere device serving our interests under the effective control of engineers. In fact it transforms our ideas and needs, not just by materialising the utopia of technology, but rather by producing utopian images.

This leads to the conclusion that technology must necessarily be ambivalent: On the one hand technology became a truth of Enlightenment and science long ago and is therefore already affected by the promise of overcoming the myth.
On the other hand, technology itself seems to be the origin of re-enchantment. Given that there is no chance of ever catching up with the promise, technology breeds a desire for returning to the myth.
If there really exists such a desire, can and shall the Enlightenment oppose that?

All graduate and undergraduate students of philosophy and those who just completed a master‘s degree are invited to submit their proposals before 1st June 2010.
We welcome any contributions of all philosophical schools or traditions and also of other disciplines related to technology, such as medical science or engineering for instance.
The presentation synopsis should not contain any reference to the name of the author and should be no longer than 2000 characters.
The proposals are selected anonymously by students of the department for philosophy at the Technische Universität Darmstadt supported by department lecturers.
Nevertheless, we ask the applicants to add a brief CV to their submission. Submissions from outside Germany are explicitly welcome. Seize the chance to try your material on an international stage! However, the abstract has to be written in one of the official conference languages, German or English.
